A COVER LETTER can do WONDERS!
« on: March 02, 2009, 11:47:57 PM »
I can not stress enough the importance of a Cover Letter. A Cover Letter tells the reader that you have read the job ad carefully and that you are truly interested in that particular job. It does more than just state what you can do... that is what the CV is for. It tells the reader how your experience can contribute to their their company!

Many employers will not even look at a CV without a Cover Letter, some will not even accept the CV.

Importants do's for a Cover Letter include:

      1. Be to the point, clearly link your experience to the role being advertised
EG. i can mix drinks efficiently and make them taste great, therefore i would be a great bartender at your bistro.

      2. Do not make it an essay. If it is longer than 3 or 4 paragraphs then you are not getting to the point. Quality over quantity as they say.

      3. The tone should be positive and upbeat, not arduous to read. Do not boast about what you can do, rather what you can do for the company.

      Do not:

      1. Simply repeat your CV in sentences

      2. Send the same cover letter to all your job applications. I know this may sound like alot of work, but an employer can definately tell when you have put the effort into tailoring your Cover Letter for their company. Likewise they will be able to tell instantly if you have not put in much effort and simply sent the same Cover Letter around.

From an employers POV if your willing to put in the effort for the Cover Letter over someone that does not, then your more likely to put effort into your future job.

I really like this one, when i send mine, i always make sure to not only tailor it to their company name etc, but I try to find some information on them, like maybe goto their website, if they have recently won an award for outstanding something, i congratulate them in my cover letter, i think its things like that makes you stand out

You use formal with personality. You never use slang. Just make sure at the last paragraph or 2nd last, you talk about how you really look forward to working with them and why.

for example, you should emphasise that your outgoing, always positive in life, team worker and love challenges. That's the personality part.

Unfortunately tailoring the cover letter is harder than it sounds. I for one admit sending a similar cover letter for a lot of job apps. I would put in one or two organisation-specific sentences.....hmm....

Listen to what GD-00 has to say. My boss often shows me the tonnes of resume he recieves....and I'll let you guys on a secret. 95% of those Resumes had no cover letter coming with it.

Amazing isn't it. And people wonder why they can't get a job. It's really a simple mistake.
