Answering "Whats your biggest weakness?"
« on: March 02, 2009, 01:46:01 AM »
I'm currently applying for jobs in the IT field (entry level desktop support), have qualifications but have no experience.

Could I use this in the dreaded question "what is you biggest weakness?"
below is a script I have wrote for replying to this question.

"I have had trouble in the past getting a job in IT because I have no commercial work experience to back me up even though I’m Well certified & have been training hard passing my exams.

However I now taking steps to correct this, for the last 12 months I have been working privately assisting friends, family, work colleges etc, with typical ongoing troubleshooting issues, mostly in the areas of

      -Internet connection
      -Remote assistance
      -Installing/updating antivirus scan software
-Disk clean up, backing up files etc

I now believe I am now ready to take on a full time career in IT & look forward to the challengers ahead"

This demonstrates a honest approach to my weakness unlike the usual "I work too hard" & shows what measures ive taken to overcome it.
Do you think this is a good anwser or is it suicidal?

Great answer. You backed up your weakness. It's shows you are honest and is willing to overcome your weakness. If I was the employer I'll hire you.  :P

"I work too hard" is a joke of an answer.

Thats a fantastic answer.  Its a weakness you're trying to take control over and you're demonstrating that not only with your evidence of privately helping others but seeking jobs and interviewing for them.

lol I probably would have said my biggest weakness is interviewing.

EDIT:

IMO that sounds like a pretty open ended question, and if asked specifically about IT then that is a good answer, but to be honest, it sounds too detailed and scripted and has a hint of desperation. I think a vague question like that can be replied to by a vague answer. Go Confucius on their asses:

"What is your biggest weakness?"

"I dont believe in weakness, only oppurtunities to better myself and in turn; this company"

Never say You are a Workaholic, a Perfectionist, etc. because it sounds negative. Try to convert these negative biased qualities into positive ones. For example, in place of Workaholic you can say you are a hard worker and always willing to work for extra hours. In place of Perfectionist, you can say you are detail oriented and like to set high standard for work.

“Try to specify your weakness as your strength and also highlight it as a benefit.”

Your answers can be:

1) One of my weaknesses as I perceive is occasional compromise on time for quality and perfection.

2) I feel I am not very detail-oriented. I’m a person that wants accomplish as much as possible. I realized this hurts quality and therefore I‘m trying hard to find a balance between quality and quantity.
