The Customer Service Job Interview
« on: June 06, 2009, 11:48:33 PM »
You've got the customer service job interview. Now what? Prepare thoroughly using the interview guidelines and be sure of standing out as the best candidate for the customer service job opening!

Most businesses have some form of customer service work ranging from the receptionist to a huge dedicated call center.

All customer service positions involve creating a positive relationship with the customer and ensuring the interaction the customer has with the business is an efficient and satisfying experience.

Candidates at a customer service job interview are asked a wide array of questions, both standard interview questions and customer service specific interview questions.

Standard interview questions include, "Tell me about yourself", "Why should we employ you?" and "What are your strengths and weaknesses?". Interviewers are impressed by candidates you have prepared good interview answers that demonstrate the relevance of their skills and experience to the position. The Common Interview Questions and Answers Guide provides a comprehensive list of standard interview questions with sample interview answers.

Frequently asked customer service job interview questions include: "What does excellent customer service mean to you?" and "What is your customer service philosophy?". View the answer guidelines to help prepare your own winning customer service answers.

You can also expect behavioral interview questions in the customer service interview that look for evidence of the key competencies needed to succeed in a customer service position.

These competencies include customer service orientation, problem analysis and solving, accuracy, adaptability, patience and stress tolerance. Typical behavioral interview questions around these competencies and interview answer guidelines are found at The Customer Service Interview Guide.

Customer service positions include those in retail, the call center, on a help desk and in sales. Specific interview guides for each of these positions include a list of job-specific interview questions with practical interview answer guidelines.

Before your customer service job interview carefully research the company. Familiarize yourself with the company's services and products, their mission, vision and future plans. Find out who the company's competitors are and make notes of interesting facts about the company. Even if you are familiar with the company, you will learn valuable information from doing some pre-interview background research.

Use this research to prepare some insightful questions to ask in the interview. Good interview questions to ask include those that explore organizational strategy and plans, management style and ethos and the job itself.

Good communication skills are key to success in a customer service position. Listen carefully and ask relevant questions to clarify what the interviewer is asking. Answer concisely and clearly. Use the guide on How to Communicate In a Job Interview to help you.

Follow up is an important aspect of customer service. Demonstrate your customer service orientation by sending a prompt thank you letter after the interview.
