Time for a change of email?
« on: February 28, 2009, 05:17:08 AM »
this is more aimed at the people who have had the same email address from since primary school, now sexc_angel or nastygirl322 might be cute when you were 16 year old, but i have a feeling that it is not quite what your future boss is looking for.

now i am not saying you should get rid of these, but perhaps it would be a good idea to create a second email just for job hunting? something more professional like

J.Smith@hotmail.com J_smith.... etc

what do you guys think? or is it too much effort

I remember the good old high school days where there were as many _babies and _angels and _princess's as 5c coins at the bottom of my CountryRoad bag.

And the funny thing I noticed was that 95% false advertisers because to my disappointment, they WERE'NT babies OR angels OR princess's. That other 5% accounted for the underage girls me and my mates. I guess we could classify them as babies so they held true to their name.  ::)

Ok!...back to the point, I agree people should think about getting a new email when they apply for jobs. Because if you have a stupid email or you think its funny, it's going to translate into something very different when you "click" the send button.

Basically you'd want to keep it as serious and professional as possible. So on that matter, what do you think of get_dwanged@hotmail.com;D

Let's take step this up one notch. What's your opinion on using free email clients such as Gmail and Hotmail?

I've recently ditched Gmail for business purposes, but still keep it on the side to segregate work/personal life.

Yeah, I see Gmail being superior to Hotmail too, not just reputation-wise.
It can send and receive twice as much (20MB as opposed to 10MB in a single email), which is handy for a designer like me.

Hotmail also has that "hot" bit in it, which seems to be the cousin of those angel/baby/sexc prefixes.

I think the email you use depends on the industry. Some can wash it over and take it as a bit of a laugh, others might think it's highly unprofessional and dismiss you.
You never know... best be on the safe side I'd say.

Gmail for business should be fine; not everyone has a need for a website (and therefore, a matching private email client). But the fancier the better I guess XD

Gmail is superior to Hotmail in pretty much every way possible. You don't need you're own website, you have an ISP, which gives you an email address.

If you're email is childish, it does help if you avoid using it for job hunting. How hard is it to make a new email. Not much effort. It worth the trouble. Some employers may have different opinion on it, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Besides all those great answers above, I think another reason why people could be using gmail for job hunting is that there's better chance of your desired email name not getting taken. Gmail is much newer compare to hotmail. I personally do have the perception that gmail is more professional than hotmail, maybe because so many ppl use it for work and that there's so many ppl use hotmail for personal life.

If your thinking of changing your email its best to make it simple and not "childish" because some companies have a filter in their inbox and when you go and apply for their job advertisement and you have something like piink-ditz@hotmail.com (lolol) it'll most likely be filter as spam mail.

Therefore your chances of getting an interview is slim.

So make it nice and short and not corny or childish~~

And from my p.o.v i prefer Gmail over Hotmail. It seems like hotmail is getting old and gmail looks and feels more professional~~

Gmail is relatively new compared to Hotmail, therefore more username possibilities are avaliable. Which is useful when you want your name or something similar to your name. As an extra tip, try putting a ".'' or a ''_'' between your first and last name to increase your chances.

Additionally, google has several other useful features such as the google calendar, documents, reader. All these applications allow you to share news, files and figures with friends and colleagues. Very useful in a personal and work environment.

Furthermore i do not recommend using an ISP provided email as your main email. The ISP email may allow you to choose whatever email address you like but there is a high possibility you will change ISP after the agreement is up, and the majority of the time your ISP email will go if you do change.

that is very correct, i have talked to many customers that is unwilling to change from their isp to a better one purely because the hassle of losing their email
