Car Insurance ?

Wasnt sure where to post this but I'm thinking of getting a car and was wondering if its possible to cancel the insurance after a few months as I dont require a car for a whole year.

If I buy one this month and cancel in 3~4 months so by september (as I'll be going to uni and wont need it anymore) will it be possible to do and what will I pay... if there is some sort of cancellation fee how much will that be? i understand it will be different for all companies but whats the average... say for tesco insurance..
