Softening the Blow of Layoffs
« on: May 12, 2009, 11:06:06 PM »
Everyone knows employees dread layoffs. After all, layoffs mean they will be without a job. However, most do not realize how much employers actually dread layoffs as well. Most employers are not comfortable with layoffs and do everything they can to avoid them. However, no matter how hard they work, layoffs are still an unfortunate part of doing business. While layoffs cannot always be avoided, the blow can be softened by using outplacement services.

When someone is laid off, many negative things can happen. Layoffs can cause:

    * Productivity to suffer
    * Morale to hit an all time low
    * Extra money to be spent

This can be avoided when the right plan is put into place. That plan involves outplacement services.

First, take a look at productivity. Productivity is essential if a company is going to compete. However, when layoffs occur, productivity can begin to suffer. That is because employees fear for their jobs and they also lose respect for their employers.

This occurs because they feel as if they are disposable. When layoffs occur and employees are dropped, employees do not feel as if they are respected. Outplacement services can keep those negative feelings from occurring.

Outplacement services help those who have suffered from layoffs find a new job. That means they are able to remain in the workforce by moving to another company. Because of that, employees feel respected instead of disposable. That helps keep productivity up.

Morale goes hand in hand with productivity. It is essential for an employer to keep morale high in a company. Respect is a big part of that.

Morale leads to pride in the work of employees. When employees have pride in their work, they make sure they get the job done right. More employees have respect for their employers when they know that outplacement services are used.

Extra money is another issue that arises in the time of layoffs. First, of course, is the money that is spent to fund unemployment. Most companies are not able to simply layoff an employee and then stop the paychecks. When an employee goes through layoffs and they cannot find work, they often apply for unemployment. The employer pays for that unemployment.

That is only one of the financial problems that can arise with layoffs. There are also legal issues that can occur. When someone has a problem finding a new job, they can file a plethora of lawsuits, including wrongful termination and discrimination. Even when they do not have a great deal of proof for their lawsuits, they still might file the suit. Such lawsuits are less likely to happen if someone can find a job quickly after being laid off, making outplacement service a great deal.

Even if a legal case is won, it will still cost money. It is much easier to use outplacement services and avoid the legal woes that plague so many businesses. By helping employees find jobs after layoffs, companies are able to protect themselves.

The money saved can help companies a great deal. Money is the backbone of the problems many companies are facing, and by saving money, they can also limit the problems they face.

Layoffs are difficult for everyone. However, instead of just accepting the difficult nature of layoffs, it is much better to do what you can in order to soften the blow. Outplacement services do a great deal to help employees and employers during the difficult time. When employees are able to find a new job after a layoff, the employer and the employee both benefit.
